The professor: Emily Baumrin, MD, MSCE, assistant professor of dermatology and medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and director of the Graft-versus-host Disease Subspecialty Clinic, Department of Dermatology
Session title: Cutaneous Chronic GVHD (How I Treat, PROs, Imaging)
Date, time and location: Friday, Feb. 6, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. MST, Room 258 of the Salt Palace Convention Center

What is the focus of your session?
“The session will focus on both established and novel approaches to measuring cutaneous chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) severity and determining therapeutic response. We will also discuss approaches to treatment for nonsclerotic and sclerotic cutaneous chronic GVHD in the setting of new FDA-approved therapies.”
How did you become interested in these themes?
“As the director of the GVHD Subspecialty Clinic in the Department of Dermatology, I often struggle to counsel patients on what ways they can expect their skin to get better with therapy, and how likely this might be. Cutaneous chronic GVHD is heterogeneous; attempts to standardize outcome measures for clinical trials can make it difficult to interpret results. I have worked to expand and improve outcome measures for cutaneous chronic GVHD to better capture meaningful responses for patients.”
What do you hope attendees will learn from your session?
“Attendees will learn how to accurately measure cutaneous chronic GVHD with clinical examination and patient-reported outcomes. They will be introduced to novel modalities being developed, including non-invasive imaging and biomarkers. Attendees will also learn approaches to treatment for nonsclerotic and sclerotic cutaneous chronic GVHD.”
How will the themes you introduce affect the next generation in your field?
“Chronic GVHD is rapidly changing with the introduction of PTCy GVHD prophylaxis and new therapies for steroid-refractory chronic GVHD. I hope these themes will inspire the next generation of clinicians and researchers to focus on meaningful endpoints in designing clinical trials and in medical decision-making for chronic GVHD.”
What else do you want to share about your Meet-the-Professor session?
“I am a dermatologist and am honored and humbled to be able to care for GVHD patients, to collaborate with transplant clinicians and researchers and to work with the NIH Consensus Development Project on Criteria for Chronic GVHD Clinical Trials. I look forward to learning from you all during this session!”
Meet-the-Professor is a series of 12 hour-long luncheon sessions in the Scientific Track featuring presentations by esteemed leaders in the transplantation and cellular therapy community. Limited tickets are available for $25 per person, per session, each of which includes a meal. Advance registration is highly recommended and can be made during online registration.
